Mission of Foreign and Economic Diplomats to Chios,  6-8 October 2016 


A mission of Economic and Commercial Counselors of Foreign Embassies was successfully organized by Enterprise Greece and the Municipality of Chios, 6-8 October 2016. The mission is part of Enterprise Greece’s Synergassia initiative that aims to promote all regions/municipalities of Greece to Foreign Diplomats posted in Athens by highlighting the unique business opportunities that every region has to offer.

During the mission, Economic and Commercial Diplomats attended a workshop where the island’s macroeconomic and investment profile was presented, met with local entrepreneurs in an effort to build on common synergies and visited  local companies.

At the workshop, welcome remarks were delivered by Enterprise Greece’s Chairman, Mr. Christos Staikos, who described the Synergassia initiative, its scope and objectives and presented Enterprise Greece’s successes and projects undertaken during the first half of 2016, the Mayor of Chios, Mr. Emmanouil Vournous and the Chairman of the Chios Chamber, Mr. Georgios Georgoulis, who welcomed the participants and invited them to explore the island’s business potential. 

The Deputy Mayor for Local Economic Development and Tourism, Mr. Dimitris Karalis described the island’s tourism industry and analyzed the Municipality’s strategy for its further development. On behalf of the Chios Chamber, Mr. George Perris, presented the business ecosystem of the island and its potential. The representative of Keramia Resort Development, Mr. Theodoros Kontes, presented the project which is expected to contribute to the island’s tourism development substantially.

In the afternoon of the same day, 100 B2B meetings among the Municipality’s entrepreneurs and the visiting diplomats were organized to discuss possibilities for future cooperation.

Meanwhile, a seminar for local SMEs was organized at the Chios Chamber by Enterprise Greece to acquaint the business community with subjects such as procedures for exports and targeting new markets etc. The seminar was attended by 20 companies.

The following day, 7 October 2016, the mission participants visited local, innovative companies (Chios Fruits SA, Stoupakis Distillery SA and Chios Mastiha Growers Association) in order to acquire a hands–on experience regarding the business and investment environment of the Region and its potential.

The diplomatic mission consisted of representatives from Poland, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Ireland, Argentina, Tunisia, USA, Cyprus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Africa, China, Philippines, Indonesia , Morocco, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Slovakia, Canada, Slovenia, Peru, Hungary and Turkey.
