Reinvigorating the Mediterranean Golf Map

The Dunes Course, a new championship golf course that opened in June at Costa Navarino, is set to “reinvigorate” the golf map in the Mediterranean and create a new level of golf in Greece.

In June, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., in partnership with TEMES S.A., announced the opening of The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort in Costa Navarino, Greece. Located in the Messinia region on Greece’s southwest Peloponnese coast, the Romanos Resort is the first hotel to open in the new destination of Costa Navarino. The Romanos is to be part of a 130-hectare, mixed-use beachfront development called Navarino Dunes, the first of four major developments in Costa Navarino.

Notably, Navarino Dunes includes the first signature golf course in Greece. “The Dunes Course,” was designed by former U.S. Masters Champion and Ryder Cup captain, Bernhard Langer in association with European Golf Design. Managed by U.S.-based Troon Golf, this 18-hole championship golf course has a fully-equipped 3,500 square metre clubhouse. Troon will also manage a second golf course, called “The Bay Course,” designed by the award-winning international golf course architectural firm, Robert Trent Jones II. The Bay Course is set to be completed later this year and will be available for play from spring 2011.

The Dunes Course, set in a landscape of diverse topography with spectacular sea and river views, incorporates some links-style features in areas closest to the sea, with tall dunes dividing some of the holes adjacent to the golden beach. Parts of the course venture into olive and fruit groves, while some holes run along a small river that meanders through the site. Combined with large undulating greens, wide fairways and steep-faced pot bunkers, the links element of the course adds to its unique style and playability.

David Spencer, CEO of The Stripe Group, a company co-chaired by Greg Norman, was enthusiastic about the Dunes Course:

I think this is the most important golf development in continental Europe since Sotogrande 46 years ago. People are going to be absolutely shocked when they see what has been built there, because it is so good that it will reinvigorate the golf map in the Mediterranean area.
David Spencer, CEO of The Stripe Group
