Gagosian Gallery Opens in Athens

Gagosian Gallery, one of the most renowned art galleries in the world, has opened a new space in the heart of Athens. Gagosian began in New York and has galleries in New York, Beverly Hills, California, London, Rome, and now Athens.

The Athens gallery opened with an exhibition by American artist Cy Twombly, who created the four pieces titled Leaving Paphos Ringed with Waves especially for the Athens space. Paphos is a city in Cyprus recognized as sacred to the goddess Aphrodite.

The opening was held September 25 and was attended by the gallery’s founder, Larry Gagosian, and Mr. Twombly. Mr. Gagosian said, at the opening, “I am happy to inaugurate a new gallery in the historical city of Athens. My expectation is to actively participate in the up and coming modern art scene in this magnificent city.”

According to the gallery owner, he sees opportunity in Athens and the entire region and has chosen Athens because of its strong cultural background, being the birthplace of democracy and Western culture. In a way similar to the opening of Gagosian in Rome, Athens is “a step outside the obvious direction” which is what the gallerist is known for—not following anyone or adhering to current standards.
Mr. Gagosian has been on a steady course of expansion with his galleries, opening Beverly Hills, London, Rome, and now Athens—with plans underway for more worldwide branches in the near future. He sees no reason for an economic crisis / dip to terminate his plans, and so is moving forward and expects the Athens branch to flourish.
Gagosian Gallery has exhibited artists including Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Joseph Beuys, Willem de Kooning,  Alberto Giacometti,  Roy Lichtenstein,  Pablo Picasso,  David Smith and Andy Warhol.

Other artists include Georg Baselitz, Cecily Brown,  Walter De Maria,  Douglas Gordon,  Richard Hamilton,  Damien Hirst,  Howard Hodgkin,  Mike Kelley,  Anselm Kiefer,  Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama,  Richard Prince,  Ed Ruscha,  Jenny Saville,  Richard Serra,, Cindy Sherman,  Philip Taaffe,  Piotr Uklanski,  Franz West,  Rachel Whiteread and Christopher Wool.
