Greece at World Expo 2010

Greece is participating in the World Expo 2010 international fair held in Shanghai, China from May 1 to October 31, 2010.

This major international event provides Greece with a superb platform to introduce millions of visitors to Greece—its history, culture, tourism, and products. In addition, Greece as an investment destination will be a significant component of the Greece Pavilion.

The theme of the exposition is "Better City – Better Life." More than 190 countries and 50 international organizations have registered.

Almost 100 foreign leaders are expected to attend the exhibition and approximately 70 million is the number of visitors estimated to stroll through its vast venues. In June, Prime Minister George Papandreou will fly to China on an official visit. The Greek National Pavilion Day is on June 19.

The Greece pavilion addresses the theme of this year’s expo through a human centered approach. Polis, the Greek city, constitutes “a city for living well” but also a live, a vibrant city! The design refers to the urban fabric, not as a physical replica, but as an interpretation of living and functioning in the city, as a reminder of the joy of the urban life. It not only exhibits the every day way of life but it also reflects an insatiable thirst for living!

The pavilion uniqueness is that it condenses 24 hours in the life of a Greek city into the 12 hours that the pavilion will be open to the public. In fact, the pavilion can be seen as a “living organism” that follows a daily cycle synchronized with the cycle of the sun in Shanghai for the duration of the Expo.

The Pavilion Halls include: ARCADE, THE CITY AND THE SEA, AGORA, ECOLOGΥ, URBAN-RURAL, THEATRE, LIVING TOGETHER, PROSPERITY, PROMENADE & PORT, SQUARE (with café-restaurant and shop). The pavilion was designed by Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis.

World Expositions are galleries of human inspirations and thoughts. Since 1851 when the Great Exhibition of Industries of All Nations was held in London, the World Expositions have attained increasing prominence as grand events for economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges, serving as an important platform for displaying historical experience, exchanging innovative ideas, demonstrating esprit de corps and looking to the future.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will centre on innovation and interaction. Expo 2010 Shanghai China will contribute to human-centred development, scientific and technological innovation, cultural diversity and win-win cooperation for a better future, thus composing a melody with the key notes of highlighting innovation and interaction in the new century.
