World Investment Conference

Invest in Greece participated in the annual World Investment Conference (WIC), held in La Baule France May 25-27, 2011.

The World Investment Conference (WIC) is an exclusive forum for entrepreneurs, corporate officers and government leaders to meet, to invest, to influence and to shape the business, technological and political landscapes of today and tomorrow.

It is the only European conference focused on technology, business, investments and policies to stimulate global economic growth.
This year, Haris Pamboukis, then-State Minister of Greece, presented a keynote on Greece as an investment location during the time Greece’s fiscal challenges and the global economic crisis.

Aristomenis (Aris) M. Syngros, Executive Chairman of Invest in Greece Agency, attended the event in order to promote Greece’s new investment era, defined by a new Investment Incentives Law and Greece’s Fast Track legislation. Interest in Greece was significant as many delegates recognised the key role that investment is to play in re-positioning Greece on a road of sustainable growth and development.

Since it has been launched in 2003, more than 6,000 world leaders, decision makers and influencers have participated in this unique and high-level conference dedicated to stimulating global economic growth, to innovation and the promising companies behind it and to promoting further access to European markets. The event has won worldwide recognition for shaping the future of international investment and the policies that surround global economic growth.

Through a series of animated keynotes, panel discussion, plenary sessions, thematic interactive workshops, presentations of innovative growth companies and organised one-on-one meetings, decision makers learn, discuss, invest and build partnerships, as well as debate and deliberate on the most pressing economic challenges of the moment. The conclusions and recommendations issued from debates are officially presented to the European Union’s executives with the ambition to provide them some concrete proposals to improve Europe’s attractiveness and competitiveness.

Every year Ernst & Young utilises the conference as a platform to release the results of its annual survey on the attractiveness of Europe and announces the survey’s key findings.

The WIC is covered live by CNBC and Euronews and has been cited in more than 2000 articles since 2003 in countries all over the world.
Objective

With globalisation gaining ground, foreign direct investment and, by the same token, attractiveness have become priorities for governments and regional authorities. Today these are critical criteria for economic vitality and competitiveness at both macroeconomic and microeconomic levels. Contributing to the creation of national wealth, in particular through financing for research and innovation, FDI inflows favour employment, sustainable development and shared prosperity.

Key objectives of WIC are to:
• Monitor FDI flows, innovation and talents
• Benchmark growth, innovation, education and employment policies
• Understand international investors’ needs
• Govern and promote Europe’s attractiveness as a whole
