The 9th New York Forum, organised under the auspices of Greece’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, and held at the Pierre Hotel on November 9 by Capital Link, brought together representatives from the Greek government, Greece’s public and private sector, and businesspeople and investors from the United States to explore the many investment opportunities that Greece offers today.

Energy Hub: Greece, Turkey Inaugurate Historic Pipeline
Greece and Turkey on November 18 inaugurated a new natural gas pipeline that has begun to transport Azeri gas from the Caspian Sea to the Greek city of Komotini. The major infrastructure project, a joint Turkish-Greek venture, was opened at a ceremony attended by Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Also in attendance were the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman.

Regional Axis: Diplomatic Mission to Epirus
ELKE, in cooperation with the Region of Epirus, organised a four-day programme in Ioannina to promote the investment opportunities in Epirus. The event, held within the framework of ELKE’s “Promoting Regional Greece” Programme, was completed with a strong interest from all involved. Thirty three Ambassadors, Economic Counselors, and Commercial Attaches from foreign Embassies in Greece accepted ELKE’s invitation and participated in the delegation.

Competitive Spirit: Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship 2007-2013
Greek Development Minister Christos Folias announced the official approval of a business programme titled "Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship 2007-2013" following a decision of EU Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hubner. The programme is included in the top priority programmes of the National Reference Strategic Framework Plan (2007-2013), that aim to improve competitiveness and export activity of Greek enterprises and the country's productive system, with a strong emphasis on innovation.

One of the most impressive achievements of the significant reforms Greece has enacted during the last three years has been the dynamic increase in foreign direct investment. Gross FDI inflows in 2006 totaled 6.995 billion EURO, while net inflows reached 4.275 billion EURO, up from 487 million EURO in 2005, a noteworthy 10-fold increase.

Discovery: From Laboratory to Market
Fifty "Smart Eyes" navigation system devices, developed to assist the blind, were presented to 50 sight-impaired persons in a special ceremony at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. The system was developed by the Telecommunications Laboratory at the Thessaloniki University Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and in 2004 won the first prize in an international "Imagine Cup" contest held in Brazil.
