Energy Cooperation between Greece and Egypt is Maturing
Athens, 04 March 2025 | For another year, Enterprise Greece organized the Greek pavilion at the International Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES), held at Egypt’s international exhibition center in Cairo from 17 to 19 February 2025.
EGYPES is one of the most significant trade fairs in oil, natural gas, renewable energy sources, and digital transition for the energy sector. It covers the broader region of the Middle East, North Africa, and the Mediterranean, and is held under the patronage of the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
This year’s event spanned 39,000 square meters and featured over 500 exhibitors from 120 countries across 11 national pavilions. It attracted more than 47,000 visitors, including local and international energy companies exploring business development prospects in Egypt, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Visitors also had the chance to learn about the development of new projects, the strategic priorities of energy transition and security, and economic growth in the broader Southeast Mediterranean region.
During the trade fair, the Enterprise Greece delegation held a series of meetings aimed at promoting the export of products and services from the Greek energy sector and attracting new investments and business development opportunities. These initiatives are being shaped by the country’s successful progress toward the green transition and its emergence as a regional energy hub.
Commenting on the country’s presence and the prospects in the energy sector, Enterprise Greece’s CEO, Dr. Marinos Giannopoulos, stated:
“Amid the significant changes in energy supply and security, and given the global shift towards green energy, this sector is experiencing dynamic growth. The substantial increase in the share of renewable energy sources in our energy mix, along with the ongoing upgrade of Greece’s international interconnections with neighboring countries, led to our country recording a negative balance in its international electrical interconnections for the first time in 2024, with the year closing with a surplus for the first time since 2000. This not only confirms our steady progress toward energy self-sufficiency but also signals our gradual transition into an energy exporter. Enterprise Greece will continue to support the internationalization of Greek energy companies through targeted initiatives, including B2B meetings, investor networking events, business missions, and participation in all major international trade fairs and events.”
The conference segment of EGYPES 2025, themed “Building a Safe and Sustainable Energy Future,” featured a series of parallel sessions focusing on topics such as Strategy, Technical Issues, Sustainability, Financing and Investments, and Dialogue with Africa. Particularly notable was the strong Greek presence, with distinguished speakers including the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Th. Skylakakis; the Deputy Minister of Energy and Environment, Ms. A. Sdoukou; the CEO of DESFA, Ms. M. Gali; the CEO of Energean, Mr. M. Rigas; the CEO of HELLENIQ Energy, Mr. A. Siamisis; and the Vice President of the Copelouzos Group, Mr. Th. Achimastos.
During the conference, a Greek-Egyptian Memorandum of Cooperation in carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCUS) was signed, aimed at exchanging expertise and developing storage facilities between the Ministers of Energy of Greece and Egypt. Additionally, significant energy projects of Greek interest were showcased, such as the international Greece-Egypt electricity interconnection (GREGY), the research and development of hydrocarbons in the South Ionian region and Crete, the offshore wind development program, and specific CCUS projects currently under development in our country.
At the Greek pavilion, in addition to Enterprise Greece, the companies ASPROFOS ENGINEERING (a member of the Helleniq Energy Group) and EDEYPE S.A. participated. Representing the sectors of technical studies for energy projects, natural gas transportation services, and the management and development of energy resources, these companies conducted significant meetings that resulted in the signing of new contracts, further promoting the internationalization of the sector.
