Workshop on RES in Madrid by Enterprise Greece – Strong Spanish Interest in the Development of Renewables in Greece

Athens, 06 February 2025 | On February 3, the Greek Embassy and the Chamber of Madrid hosted an information day focused on the investment framework for Greece’s Renewable Energy Sources (RES) sector. The event, supported by Enterprise Greece and the Spanish Hellenic Chamber of Commerce in Madrid, aimed to highlight the opportunities in the Greek renewable energy market.
The event, held at the Madrid Chamber of Commerce (Cámara Madrid), aimed to encourage targeted Spanish companies to participate in the Renewable Energy Tech Exhibition organized by HELEXPO from March 13 to 15, 2025, in Thessaloniki, as part of the exhibition’s Hosted Buyers program.
70 representatives of important Spanish groups and institutional bodies were invited to the conference. Everyone considers both the attendance and the outcomes of the networking meetings that took place after the presentations to be very satisfactory.
Referring to the success of this event, the CEO of Enterprise Greece, Dr. Marinos Giannopoulos, stated: “The considerable interest noted during the Madrid conference regarding the development of RES in our country and Greece’s successful journey toward the Green Transition is a natural extension of the already significant presence of large, dynamically growing energy groups from Spain in our country. Indeed, numerous new players have entered the Greek market dynamically over the past 5 years, both in terms of generating electricity from RES and supplying related equipment and services. The country’s successful trajectory regarding the lignite phase-out and the achievement of electricity production potential from RES exceeding 50% is significantly aided by these positive developments.»
The event was initiated by Mrs. Elsa Salvadores, the Deputy Director General of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, followed by a welcome address from the Ambassador of Greece, Mrs. Aglaia Balta. Mr. Andreas Pappas, President of the Spanish-Hellenic Chamber, also offered a brief greeting. During the conference, Madrid Office executives Mr. Pantelis Gasios and Mrs. Christina Economou provided an overview of the Greek economy, bilateral trade, and investment relations, as well as the potential for further enhancement. The session then featured an in-depth presentation by Mr. Nikos Stamou, Director of Attracting Investments for Energy, Environment, and Services at Enterprise Greece, who discussed Greece’s renewable energy and energy infrastructure sectors, highlighting investment opportunities and prospects for Spanish companies.
Ms. Rada Ivanova, International Consultant and Head for Europe and Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) at the Madrid Chamber of Commerce, also delivered a brief presentation. She highlighted the promotion of the Renewable Energy Tech Exhibition/Forward Green Exhibition organized by HELEXPO and invited Spanish companies with commercial and investment interests in the Greek renewable energy sector to take part in the exhibition’s Hosted Buyers program.
A key point of focus was the statement by Mr. José Oriol Hoyos, Chairman of Iberdrola Renewables International, who discussed Iberdrola’s successful 20-year investment presence in Greece. Mr. Hoyos emphasized that:
- Greece provides a stable investment environment, offering security to investors in meeting the financial commitments related to the development and operation of RES projects.
- Greece was the initial cornerstone of Iberdrola’s international expansion, sharing many similarities and development opportunities in the energy sector with Spain.
- Iberdrola is seeking local partners and specialized talent for the successful execution of investments.
The conference underscored the substantial investment opportunities between Greece and Spain in the RES sector, affirming the strategic role of Spanish business groups in the Greek energy market.
