Dynamic Presence of Greek Businesses in Spain Greek – Spanish Trade Relations Strengthen

Athens, May 29, 2025 – The significant opportunities emerging for key sectors of the Greek economy were highlighted during the business mission to Spain, the first Greek business mission in over two decades. Held successfully in Madrid from May 25 to 27, 2025, the mission was co-organized by Enterprise Greece, the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), and the Greek Exporters Association (SEVE), in collaboration with the Greek Economic and Commercial Affairs Office (OΕΥ), and supported by Eurobank and the Hellenic–Spanish Chamber of Commerce.

The head of the delegation was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Diplomacy and Openness, Mr. Tasos Chatzivasileiou, marking the high level of political support for Greek outward entrepreneurship.

The mission included 19 dynamic Greek companies from the information and communication technologies (ICT), food and beverage, and construction–building materials sectors. More than 150 targeted business meetings were held with Spanish companies.

As part of the mission, on Sunday, May 25, Ambassador Aglaia Balta hosted a formal reception in honor of the Greek delegation at the ambassadorial residence, attended by key Spanish partners.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, the Hellenic–Spanish Business Forum took place at CEOE (Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations), where the business environment and investment opportunities in the Spanish market were presented. Opening speeches were delivered by the Greek Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Diplomacy & Openness, Mr. Tasos Chatzivasileiou, and the Spanish Deputy Minister of Trade, Ms. Amparo López Senovilla. Welcoming remarks were also given by Ms. Marta Blanco, Chair of the CEOE’s International Relations Committee; Ms. Sofia Kounenaki Efraimoglou, First Vice President of EBEA; and Ms. Vicky Makrygianni, Director of International Relations at SEV.

Ms. Sofia Kounenaki Efraimoglou, First Vice President of ACCI, stated:
“This business mission to Spain is a targeted initiative to strengthen bilateral economic ties and highlight new cooperation opportunities in high value-added sectors. Spain, with its developed and competitive business and tech ecosystem, is emerging as a strategic partner for Greece. We already have a strong foundation in sectors such as agri-food, energy, tourism, and industry — upon which we can build new, focused synergies in innovation, digital technology, infrastructure, and startups. The Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry actively supports the internationalization of Greek businesses by facilitating networking, access to reliable information, and the creation of international partnerships that enhance their competitiveness.”

Ms. Vicky Makrygianni, Director of International Relations at SEV, noted:
“Spain is one of Greece’s top trading partners, ranking 8th in Greek export destinations in 2024. However, Spanish imports from Greece account for just 0.04% of Spain’s total imports, which highlights the substantial potential to grow our trade relations. Differences in export structures and production levels between the two economies enhance opportunities for collaboration. There are many promising business opportunities, and our shared Mediterranean culture and complementary advantages provide a solid basis for meaningful, mutually beneficial cooperation.”

Ms. Annita Tryposkoufi, Director of SME and Large Exporters – Industry – Energy – Shipping & Country Promotion at Enterprise Greece, presented the potential for commercial cooperation between the two countries, while Mr. Pantelis Gasios, Head of the Greek Economic and Commercial Affairs Office, analyzed bilateral trade. Ms. Aliki Mavroeidi, Head of Trade Fairs & Missions – Country Promotion/EXPO Management at Enterprise Greece, also participated.

Important success stories of Greek Spanish collaboration were shared by Mr. Michalis Kokkinos, President of the Hellenic–Spanish Chamber of Commerce; Mr. José Oriol Hoyos, President of Iberdrola Renovables Internacional; and Mr. Spyros Sbonias, CFO and Administrative Director of Acuidelta.

Later in the afternoon of May 26, the President of the Madrid Chamber of Commerce (Cámara de Madrid), Mr. Ángel Asensio, hosted the business delegation at the Chamber’s headquarters, facilitating networking between Greek companies and selected Chamber members.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the business delegation visited the “Parque Científico de Madrid” (Madrid Science Park).

Commenting on the outcomes of the business mission, Enterprise Greece CEO, Dr. Marinos Giannopoulos, stated: “During meetings between members of the Greek delegation and representatives of Spanish industries and businesses, the importance of further strengthening trade relations was underlined, as Spain is a key market for Greek products. We firmly believe that enhancing bilateral trade between Greece and Spain will benefit both countries by promoting goods exchange, joint ventures, and innovative synergies.”

SEVE – Greek Exporters Association, stated: “We are convinced that enhancing extroversion and developing trade ties with key partners like Spain plays a vital role in advancing the growth and cooperation of Greek enterprises. The strong presence of the business community on this mission reflects the strategic intent of Greek producers to capitalize on the potential of the Spanish market, with a focus on dynamic sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, construction materials, technology, and environmental solutions. Despite the challenges of 2024, Greek exports exceeded €1.5 billion, and bilateral trade reached €4.73 billion — underscoring Spain’s strategic importance and the strong potential for further trade expansion.”

Eurobank, a leading presence in Greece, actively supported the mission, reaffirming its strategic commitment to extroversion and strengthening it through its digital platform Exportgate.
