Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to lead trade delegation to China
Athens, 30 October 2019 | Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will lead a high level trade delegation to China next month coinciding with the China International Import Expo 2019 (CIIE), where Greece will be the honored country and highlighting the growing commercial ties between Greece and China.
During the visit and exhibition, the Greek government has arranged for a series of commercial and cultural initiatives to further boost relations between the two countries: including a business forum for Chinese investors in Greece, business-to-business (B2B) meetings, and specialty exhibits to be hosted at the Greek pavilion to the trade fair.
The Greek national participation to the CIIE, to be held 5-10 November in Shanghai, was organized by Enterprise Greece under the slogan: A culture to share. The national pavilion will feature a virtual reality tour of Santorini, allowing visitors to experience a stroll through the island’s quaint streets and see the famed sunset of Oia. It will also feature the jewelry exhibition Fruits and Symbols, recently hosted by the Athens Numismatic Museum, and an exhibition with copies of Greek antiquities curated by the Ministry of Culture.
Present at the pavilion will be 26 Greek food and beverage exporters, who will showcase their products and where a Gastronomy Bar will allow visitors to sample fine Greek foods such as olive oil, honey, and cheeses among other items. At the Wine Bar, guests will be able to taste selected varieties of Greek wines. In addition, master classes for Greek wine will be held on 7-9 November and aimed at professionals from the catering industry.
Business representatives from more than 60 Greek companies, as well as senior government officials, will accompany Prime Minister Mitsotakis on his visit 3-6 November. Included in the delegation are representatives from some of Greece’s most dynamic industrial sectors, including energy, tourism, shipping, construction, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture.
A special Business Forum will be held on 4 November with the participation of the prime minister, and organized by Enterprise Greece in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Business Forum aims at strengthening and further promoting Greece-China economic relations, as well as developing bilateral investment and trade partnerships in new sectors. Greek businesses will have the opportunity to engage in B2B meetings with more than 200 representatives of targeted Chinese companies to explore opportunities for collaboration.
Reflecting the ever growing relationship with China, earlier this year the two countries signed the bilateral three year Greece-China Action Plan 2020-2022 outlining areas of cooperation in transportation, energy, telecommunications, financial services, processing and research & development.
At the multilateral level, Greece is participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), announced in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aims to create a 21st century Silk Road. In April this year, Greece joined China’s 17+1 Initiative, a multilateral forum for economic cooperation and development in Central and Eastern Europe.
