on business opportunities in Qatar and Oman

Athens, 13 December 2024 | “Discover Qatar & Oman” was held by the Enterprise Greece, the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises and Industries, the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), and the Exporters’ Association (SEVE), with the support of Eurobank, on Tuesday, December 10, at the offices of SEV. The event aimed to strengthen Greece’s bilateral relations with Qatar and Oman and to inform Greek businesses about the growth potential of these two markets.

Bilateral Relations between Greece and Qatar
Qatar’s economy is mainly based on hydrocarbons, with the government aiming to diversify through its National Development Strategy 2024–2030. The bilateral relations between Greece and Qatar are positive with exports amounting to €64.3 million. and imports at EUR 27.6 million. euro for 2023.
Our country mainly exports petroleum products, metals, and building stones. The Qatari market shows significant growth prospects in sectors such as renewables (the country invests in solar and wind farms), tourism, shipping, and logistics (the expansion of Hamad Port offers opportunities for cooperation in logistics services).

Bilateral Relations between Greece and Oman
Oman, through its Vision 2040 strategy, seeks to diversify its economy in the tourism, construction and renewable energy sectors. Greece’s exports to Oman amount to €14.3 million. and include machinery and electrical equipment, while imports from Oman for 2023 amounted to 34.8 million. and related to aluminum products and fuels.
Development prospects in Oman:
1. Construction and urban development: With projects like Al Khuwair Downtown, Oman is looking for international partnerships to enhance its urban infrastructure.
2. Agricultural production: Oman emphasizes on improving food security, where Greek know-how in agrotechnology can be utilized.
3. Health and pharmaceuticals: Health and pharmaceutical production are emerging sectors.

The “Discover Qatar & Oman” event included three sections:
1. H.E. the Ambassador of Greece to Qatar, Mr. Ioannis Ioannidis, and H.E. the Ambassador of Greece to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Alexis Konstantopoulos, urged the guests to operate in Qatar and Oman, as they have significant opportunities in sectors in which Greek companies have know-how and experience.

2. The second session, with emphasis on bilateral trade relations and business opportunities, was attended by Ms. Maria Moraki, Attaché of Economic and Financial Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who referred in detail to the Qatari market, and Mr. Yiannis Samartzopoulos, Secretary of the Second Economic and Financial Sector, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who spoke about the trade relations between Greece and Oman. Mrs. Eleni Albadi, Eurobank’s i-Services Senior Officer referred to the opportunities for cooperation between businesses in the two countries and Greece in important economic sectors.

3. In the last session of the event on entrepreneurship in these markets, their experience was submitted by Mr. Nikos Dedemadis, Export Manager, TEMAK, Total Water Solutions, Mr. Nestor Avgoustidis, Business Development Manager, Frezyderm, Mr. Panagiotis Zisiadis, Exports Business Developer Manager, Elvida Foods and Mr. Vasilis Kaplanidis, Export Area Manager, Dodoni S.A., while the discussion was moderated by Mr. Panagiotis Chasapis, Executive Vice President, SEVE.

The event attracted 100 businessmen, confirming the growing interest in the markets of Qatar and Oman.

The member of the Board of Directors of Enterprise Greece, Mrs. Betty Alexandropoulou, noted: “The markets of Qatar and Oman offer unique opportunities for cooperation and growth, constituting dynamic pillars for strengthening the international competitiveness of the Greek economy. In critical sectors, such as renewable energy, shipping, tourism, construction, and agricultural production, the prospects are enormous. Through targeted actions, such as today’s event, we aspire to provide Greek businesses with the necessary information and support to make the most of the potential of these markets. At the same time, we seek to establish long-term and mutually beneficial relations, which will enhance the extroversion and sustainable development of the Greek economy.”

SEV’s Director of International Relations and Regional Development, Ms. Vicky Makrigianni, noted: “Qatar and Oman are key partners in the strategy for access to the markets of the Gulf and the wider Middle East region. Greece is in an advantageous position due to its geographical proximity and historical relations with Arab countries. By strategically investing in sectors such as construction, food, technology, and energy, Greek businesses can strengthen their presence and take advantage of the opportunities for growth and cooperation offered. Innovative solutions, quality, and reliability of Greek products are the keys to success in these dynamic and growing markets.”

The First Vice-President of ACCI, Ms. Sofia Kounenaki Efraimoglou, stressed: “The Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry actively supports the goal of networking with the markets of Oman and Qatar. These are two countries with strong economic growth and high incomes, in which there is great scope for expanding the Greek presence. Specifically, energy, investments, tourism infrastructure, real estate, trade, transport, innovation, culture, and sports are key areas of interest, in which Greece presents significant advantages, but also a remarkable business potential, with a strong extrovert orientation, developed know-how and specialization. The ACCI has signed Memoranda of Understanding with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of both Qatar and Oman. It participates in bilateral contacts in the framework of economic diplomacy, maintaining open channels of communication with similar business entities, to contribute to the development of fruitful business contacts, which will lead to mutually beneficial cooperations.”

The Executive Vice President of SEVE, Mr. Panagiotis Chasapis, referred to the significant prospects presented by the markets of Qatar and Oman for Greek businesses, underlining the dynamics developing in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, technology, and construction. In Qatar, Greek exports in 2023 amounted to €64.3 million, despite a slight decline compared to the previous year. while the positive trade balance of €36.6m. It highlights the stability of the Greek presence in the market. At the same time, in Oman, Greek exports, although reduced by 9.4% compared to 2022, showed an increase of 2.8% in the long term, demonstrating the steady penetration of Greek businesses. Butcher stressed that the needs of the two countries in critical areas, such as sustainable energy, infrastructure, and food, are in line with Greece’s expertise, while Oman’s Vision 2040 development program and Qatar’s investments in smart cities create new opportunities for cooperation. Concluding, he assured that SEVE will remain a valuable helper in enhancing the extroversion of Greek businesses, supporting their efforts for strategic growth and consolidation in the dynamic markets of the Middle East.
