«Doing business in the UK»- Opportunities for further promotion of Greek quality products

Athens, 20 November 2024 | Enterprise Greece, in collaboration with the Economic & Commercial Affairs Office of the Greek Embassy in London and in the context of supporting Greek extroversion, successfully implemented the twenty-third webinar “Doing Business in… challenges and opportunities” on Thursday 14 November 2024, focusing on the UK market.

The event, which gathered approximately 180 registrations, was framed online by distinguished speakers from the Greek Embassy in London and from the business community of the food & beverage and clothing sectors.

During the event, it was stressed that the United Kingdom, as one of Greece’s main trading partners with which our country maintains a trade surplus over time, even after its withdrawal from the European Union, offers a friendly and healthy business environment. The British market, due to its significant size and high level of maturity, offers significant opportunities for Greek quality products, while it also presents several challenges due to intense competition.

Especially for food-beverages, where a significant increase in exports has been recorded over the last five years, it was pointed out that Greek exporters should, by demonstrating the required professionalism, ensure on the one hand, consistent quality and compliance of their products with British standards and new import procedures and, on the other hand, reliable supply and availability of products. Regarding wine, whose exports have risen sharply since 2020, it was stressed that British consumers, guided by quality, health and environmental awareness, show a preference for premium, sparkling, low alcohol as well as organic products, with the relevant certifications and sustainable packaging enhancing their attractiveness.

The prospects of the garment sector were mentioned as noteworthy, given the size of the market and the estimate of its growth in the UK at levels of 3.4%, in the period 2024-2029.

The event was opened by the CEO of Enterprise Greece, Dr. Marinos Giannopoulos, stating, among other things: “Greek-British relations, which historically and traditionally have been at an excellent diplomatic and political level, have remained unaffected by Brexit, which is due both to the presence there of many companies of Greek interests, especially in the sectors of shipping, energy, Information Technology (ICT), as well as in the active and populous Greek community. The dynamics of cooperation between the two countries are also evident in bilateral trade relations. However, there is still further scope for strengthening collaboration and synergy in several areas of goods and services.

The Ambassador of Greece in London, Mr. Ioannis Tsaousis, then addressed a greeting, saying that apart from the excellent level of bilateral relations, our country places particular emphasis on the development of Greek British economic and trade relations. Finally, the Head of the Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs in London, Ms. Vivi Kambouroglou, stated, inter alia, in her presentation that the UK is a mature market with significant opportunities, but also challenges, for quality Greek products.
