Η Enterprise Greece στην WindEurope 2024: Investments €7 billion over the next 7 years for the development of offshore wind farms in our country
Athens, 01 April 2024 | Enterprise Greece participated in WindEurope 2024, one of the most important international conferences and exhibitions on wind energy, which took place in Bilbao between 20 and 22 March.
Under the slogan “Our wind, our value – Creating value for Europe, living Europe’s values”, this year’s conference addressed topics such as the added value of wind energy for the creation of new jobs, nature protection, energy security, economic competitiveness, and local communities.
After several years of pandemic, war, inflation and energy crisis within Europe, optimism in the sector has returned as investment in new wind farms increases, more permits are approved, and the sector’s supply chain increases its sales and production capacity. According to estimates by WindEurope, the European Union is expected to develop wind farms in the order of 29 GW per year from 2024 to 2030, while making its 2030 targets achievable. Indicatively, last year, wind farms with a capacity of 16.2 GW were built across the EU.
Within the framework of the exhibition, 15 meetings were held with the participation of major wind project development companies, several of which are already active in Greece. The executives of foreign companies who participated in the meetings were briefed by Enterprise Greece’s Investment Attraction Director, Mr. Nikos Stamou, on regulatory developments in RES, the growth prospects of the wind sector, as well as the wide range of investment opportunities and synergies developed in the energy sector in the recent period. It is noted that most of the participating companies are already considering, or even planning, their further development with new investment plans in our country, both in offshore wind and energy storage, as well as in Services such as specialized Support Centers (SSC-GBS) for the provision from Greece of specialized services by scientists such as Electrical-Mechanical Engineers, Software Development, etc. to support the wider operations of Energy Groups.
In the Conference that was held in parallel with the exhibition and had a large participation, in the inaugural Ministerial Meeting with the participation of 5 European officials, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Ms. Alexandra Sdoukou, presented Greece’s performance in the green transition and the challenges faced by the whole of Europe to achieve climate neutrality goals. The Deputy Minister also referred to the next “green” goal of our country, which is the development of offshore wind farms, for which investments of more than 7 billion euros are expected over the next 7 years to achieve the target of installed capacity of 1.9GW of offshore wind by 2030, as provided for in the national energy and climate plan.
Then, in a special session on developments in wind energy in Southern Europe, on the Greek side, the CEO of the Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (EDEYEP), Mr. Aris Stefatos, presented the latest developments in the National Plan for the Development of Offshore Wind Parks, while the General Manager of ELETAEN, Mr. Panagiotis Papastamatiou, referring to the prospects for onshore wind farms in Greece, focused on the main challenges for their development and in particular: the expansion and strengthening of electricity networks, the need for a balanced mix of production from RES technologies with a greater contribution of wind energy, the cuts in green energy produced and the economic impact they bring to projects.
