Greek delegation to BIG 5 Construct East Africa
Athens, 15 November 2018| Enterprise Greece has led a successful mission to the BIG 5 Construct East Africa 2018 exhibition, one of Africa’s key international building and construction materials trade fairs, helping to cement several new business deals for Greek businesses.
The Greek participation to the fair, for the second year running, is part of Enterprise Greece’s ongoing program to promote Greek exports to new emerging markets. The fair took place from 7 to 9 November 2018 at the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi, Kenya.
Greek participation was the largest among the EU countries. Nine (9) leading Greek companies from the building materials, construction, solar systems, aluminum and refractory stones sectors participated in the delegation.
Most of the participating Greek companies reached new commercial agreements in the meetings held during the exhibition with representatives from large construction companies operating in the wider East Africa region, as well as with import companies, architects and engineers.
Because of its strategic position and its relative political stability in recent years, Kenya is an important regional hub for the wider East Africa region. Both Kenya and its neighbors are developing rapidly. The newly established BIG 5 Construct East Africa trade fair is an example of the growing foreign interest in the region with exhibitors from 32 countries, drawing more than 10,000 visitors and extending over an 11,000 square meters exhibition area.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Urban Development and Public Works of Kenya, Mr. Paul Maringa, who visited the Greek stand and spoke with representatives of the Greek companies. Mr. Maringa showed strong interest in Greek products and expressed his conviction that trade ties between the two countries will grow substantially in the coming years.
In the framework of the visit of Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Terence Quick to Nairobi, Mr. George Zissimatos, a member of Enterprise Greece’s Board of Directors, accompanied Mr. Quick on an official visit to Kenya’s National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI). Mr. Kiprono Kittony, President of the Chamber, discussed issues of commercial cooperation between the two countries and the organization of the next trade and business mission in the first quarter of 2019. In addition, the two men discussed shipping-related issues focusing on the experience of Greek companies in the fishing industry, as well as promotion of the Golden Visa program in the countries of East Africa.
This meeting was followed by a visit to the Greek stand by Deputy Minister Quick, accompanied by the Greek Ambassador to Nairobi, Mr. Konstantinos Moatsos, and the head of the Consular Office, Mr. Sevastianos Kontovounisios.
Both Mr. Quick and Ambassador Moatsos discussed the business opportunities presented not only in Kenya but also in the wider East African region and expressed their support for the work of the Greek companies that will be active in the region.
