Greek Participation in World Expo 2020

Athens, 19 February 2019 | Greece’s participation in next year’s World Expo 2020 was formalized today with the countersigning of a bilateral agreement with Dubai as the country prepares for the global, quintennial event slated to begin next October.
Aiming to promote just and sustainable development and the free movement of ideas, goods, and people under the banner “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, Dubai – a part of the United Arab Emirates — will host the World Expo 2020 between 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021. The bilateral agreement formalizing Greece’s participation was signed by Greek General Commissioner and Deputy Minister of Economy & Development Ilias Xanthakos and Najeeb al Ali, Executive Director of the Expo2020 Dubai Bureau.
The exhibition aims to serve as a global platform for discussion and exchange of ideas, and to highlight creativity through innovative stands and activities. The exhibition space, drawing inspiration from local urban planning, architecture and the natural environment, has been structured around three zones, each highlighting the themes of next year’s expo: Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. Each zone in turn leads to the central square of the exhibition called Al Wasl, which means “Connecting” in Arabic.
The Opportunity Zone will focus on the potential of individuals and communities in shaping the future. The Mobility Zone will feature smarter and more productive ways to ensure the mobility of people, goods and ideas. Finally, the Sustainability Zone will feature initiatives to respect the environment and the world in which we live.
The signed, bilateral agreement was delivered during an official visit to Dubai by Enterprise Greece Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Grigoris Stergioulis, accompanied by the Greek Ambassador to the UAE, Catherine Boura.
During the visit, Mr. Stergioulis and Ambassador Boura toured the exhibition area and spoke at length with Mr. Najeeb al Ali about the vision and objectives of the country’s participation. At next year’s World Expo, Greece will present visitors with an overview of the country’s economy and culture, as well as Greece’s contribution to global mobility, a factor which the country an important strategic partner in the world.
