Greek Start-Up Ecosystem in Silicon Valley

Athens, 19 February 2019 | With great warmth and high expectations, the US and international investment community welcomed the presence of Enterprise Greece and the Greek ecosystem of start-ups at this year’s Startup Grind Global Conference, held in Silicon Valley, California, 12-13 February 2019.
The Conference is closely intertwined with the high-tech sector’s overall activity, and dozens of world-renowned Silicon Valley tech companies – global leaders in the field – are involved with the event. Participants include start-ups, angel investors, venture capital funds, thought leaders and CEOs from leading tech companies.
During the two-day conference, Enterprise Greece had the opportunity to provide detailed information, through an information booth in the main conference room, about developments in the Greek market for start-ups and opportunities for financing new projects. In total, over sixty (60) individual meetings were held.
On the sidelines of Startup Grind, Enterprise Greece also connected with major American accelerators, such as the 500 startups and the US Market Access Center. The agency also met with several Greek entrepreneurs active in the wider region, working as angel investors, or as executives of tech companies and venture capital funds.
The Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs of the Consulate General of Greece in San Francisco, which has developed a network of contacts, played a major role in organizing the meetings. The purpose of these meetings was to gain a better understanding of the way the US start-up investment market operates and to focus potential investment interest on specific technology sectors. The areas of immediate interest include: automation and artificial intelligence systems, data analytics, IoT, marketing technologies, platforms and applications related to the tourism and hospitality industry, as well as applications for the medical and shipping sectors.
Finally, Enterprise Greece participated in an event organized by the Silicon Valley branch of the European Institute of Technology Digital (EIT Digital). The main focus of EIT Digital is to serve as a bridge between the European ecosystem and the dynamic Silicon Valley ecosystem. The event was attended by similar organizations from other European countries (Germany, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, Latvia), which have a permanent presence in the region. Enterprise Greece officials updated officials and business representatives about developments in the Greek start-up community and the advantages Greece offers, while also gaining insight into the promotion strategies and best practices followed by other European countries in the market.
The contacts established during these events and meetings will provide a channel of communication with important business decision-making centers and other practitioners in the field.
Enterprise Greece President & CEO Grigoris Stergioulis said: “Following our highly successful participation in the CES International Exhibition in Las Vegas, our Agency, committed to the potential of the Greek start-up ecosystem, this time went to Silicon Valley. We are continually supporting one of Greece’s main competitive advantages: the country’s talented and highly qualified human resources in the field of hi-tech. In recent years, Greece’s talent pool has driven the country’s dynamic start-ups sector, creating companies ready and able to compete internationally. With the certainty that innovative, investment and business-friendly ideas and business will be the main pillar of our country’s development in the era of the fourth industrial revolution, Enterprise Greece remains committed to supporting, with new collaborations and initiatives, the Greek start-up scene.”
