IT fair Web Summit 2018
Athens, 13 November 2018| Greece has established its presence in the world of information technology with its first time participation this month at the Web Summit 2018 international exhibition in Lisbon, one of the largest international conferences in the technology and innovation sector.
The Web Summit, now in its 9th year, drew 70,000 participants from 170 countries. The Greek national participation at the 5-8 November event was jointly organized by Enterprise Greece and the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media.
Participants included a mix of governmental entities, businesses and high-level executives from both the technology sector and related markets and industries that integrate innovation and technology into their operations. The Web Summit organized a series of vertically integrated working meetings where more than 1,200 speakers, 18,500 CEOs and 2,000 newcomers attended.
The Greek delegation comprised of both public sector representatives from Enterprise Greece and the Ministry of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media, as well from selected private sector start-ups. The aim of the participation, beyond the meetings and contacts that took place in the framework of the Web Summit, was to formalize a partnership between the Web Summit and Greece. This partnership will organize vertically integrated conferences promoting the country as an investment destination for innovation, technology and audiovisual productions.
The Web Summit coincided with the announcement that the City of Athens has been named European Capital of Innovation for 2018 by the European Commission, which led to enhanced interest from summit participants to learn more about the Greek mission and the country’s innovation ecosystem. The Greek pavilion was visited by more than 2,000 prospective investors and other attendees, and received positive feedback on both its design and quality of informational materials provided.
The Mayor of Athens, Georgios Kaminis, and Spyridon Dakoglou, Secretary General of the Economic and Commercial Affairs Office of the Greek Embassy in Lisbon, attended the conference and visited the Greek pavilion.
