Mediterranean Resort & Hotel Real Estate Forum 2018

Athens will host the next Mediterranean Resort & Hotel Real Estate Forum in October 2018 following a successful bid by Enterprise Greece, the state trade and investment promotion agency, with the support of Greece’s Tourism Ministry. The forum, one of the leading tourism and property shows in the region, will be held in the Greek capital Oct. 17-19 next year.

The exhibition is expected to draw a large number of international investors, global tourism chains, tourism professionals and resort developers to discuss the latest trends in the Mediterranean travel and tourism industry. It will also serve as an opportunity for foreign visitors to see and evaluate the opportunities offered by Greece as a tourism destination.

Greece’s successful bid to host next year’s MRH Forum is by itself a significant development that shows how the country is turning the page and how tourism is contributing to Greece’s recovery. With a forecast 30 million visitors this year, Greece is one of the world’s top 20 visitor destinations and the sector accounts for roughly one-sixth of the Greek economy.

Underscoring the Greek government’s commitment to support the industry, at this year’s MRH Forum, held in Tarragona, Spain Oct. 16-18, officials from Enterprise Greece were joined – for the first time – by senior officials from the Tourism Ministry. Ministry General Secretary for Tourism, Infrastructure and Investments, Mr. George Tziallas, joined a panel of speakers to discuss the development of the Mediterranean as a tourism destination (Photo 2).

“The strategy of the ministry is to make Greece one of the top 10 tourist destinations in the world, 365 days a year, by opening up new source markets and creating new destinations and thematic tourism products,” Mr. Tziallas said in his remarks.

The forum is the most significant event of its kind in Europe focusing on investments in Mediterranean tourism resorts, and each year serves as a leading venue for deal making in the industry. The event was organized by the Questex Hospitality Group, which also organizes a series of investment fora in Europe, Asia and the U.S., including the annual International Hotel Investment Forum (IHIF).

At this year’s MRH Forum, Enterprise Greece built on its previous participation in the event by organizing a special round table devoted to Greece, as well as with a specially designed booth showcasing Greece as an investment destination, particularly in the area of resort development (Photo 1).

During the special round table, Mrs. Angela Michalopoulou, Director for Investment Promotion at Enterprise Greece, outlined the exceptional opportunities in Greece for resort and hotel development in various areas of the country, and highlighted Greece’s successful Golden Visa program in attracting new investors. Mrs. Michalopoulou also referred to the agency’s investment matchmaking program and its other support activities for foreign investors in Greece.
