Online Workshop for the Greek RES
Athens, 17 March 2021 | With the participation of representatives of 13 (thirteen) Spanish and 70 (seventy) Greek companies and institutions, the online workshop, organized by Enterprise Greece and the Commercial and Economic Affairs of the Spanish Embassy in Athens, was held with the support of HELAPCO, the Hellenic Wind Energy Association (HWEA) and the Spanish Investment and Exports Organization (ICEX).
The event took place on Wednesday 10, 2021, as well as the online business meetings (B2B) that followed, showcased the strong interest of Spanish companies for business partnerships in the rapidly growing Renewable Energy Sector (RES)in Greece, as well as the positive prospects for the Greek economy for 2021.
Τhe forthcoming regulatory changes for Renewable Energy Sources, electricity generation and energy storage were highlighted, which create new investment opportunities for the development of RES power plants, the adoption of electromobility, biofuels, energy efficiency, as well as the rapidly developing energy storage.
The Spanish companies’ representatives, that participated in both the conference and the B2B meetings, appeared completely satisfied with the meetings that took place and the ideas that were developed. It became apparent for the Spanish companies that there are possibilities and opportunities for cooperation with the Greek companies that participated in the event, and that the current situation makes Greece a promising market for investments.
Opening speeches at the workshop were addressed by the CEO of Enterprise Greece, Mr. George Filiopoulos, who focused on the investment perspective of Greece in the RES sector, as well as by the Ambassador of Spain to Greece, Mr. Enrique Viguera Rubio, who presented the dynamics of the RES sector in Spain and opportunities for bilateral business cooperation.
Speaking at the online event, Mr. George Filiopoulos said that Greece remains a very promising and safe investment destination in Southeast Europe, even amidst the current business uncertainty imposed by the pandemic. “Enterprise Greece continues to record strong investment interest in various sectors of the economy, including the energy sector, a sector where new investments worth over 40 billion euros are expected to be implemented in according to estimates for the next decade. We call on foreign investors to explore the attractive investment opportunities that Greece offers in the field of renewable energy sources” he stated.
The Spanish Ambassador to Greece Mr Enrique Vigera Rubio, , expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the event that took place last week, and was impressed by the quality and quantity of the Greek and Spanish participant companies.
“An event of this sort could serve as a catalyst to further enhance the already existing cooperation between Greece and Spain in the field of renewable energy sources. Indeed, the positive experience of successful Spanish companies in the Greek energy market, present in Greece for several years, could further encourage possible new Spanish players to explore the opportunities that the country has to offer in both traditional areas and in more innovative ones, such as offshore wind technology, large projects, energy storage, hydrogen. The dynamism of the Greek RES sector is beyond any doubt and will continue this way in the coming years. Proof of this was the interest of Spanish and Greek companies of different areas of expertise (engineering, developers, EPCs, manufacturers, large energy consumers, etc.) to hold meetings between each other to explore areas of mutual collaboration, which he is positive that will bear fruit in the coming months.”, said emphatically the Spanish Ambassador.
“Such an event can contribute to further strengthening the already good cooperation between the two countries, in the field of Renewable Energy Sources, said the Spanish Ambassador. He added that the examples of Spanish companies that are active with great success in the field of energy in Greece in recent years, could encourage other companies to discover the opportunities that Greece has to offer, both in traditional sectors and in more innovative, such as offshore wind technology, large energy storage projects, etc. “The interest shown by Spanish and Greek companies from different fields of expertise (engineers, programmers, EPCs, manufacturers, large energy consumers, etc..) to explore areas of mutual cooperation, I am sure will bear fruits in the coming months.
During the webinar, the representative of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Mr. Yiannis Vougiouklakis, referred to the recent sectoral developments and challenges affecting the industry, while Mr. Nikos Stamou from Enterprise Greece, presented the macroeconomic perspective and the advantages for the development of new RES investments in Greece.
The workshop event concluded with speeches delivered by Ms. Ioulia Pournara, RES Legal Advisor, EY Law Greece, who referred to the legal framework of the RES sector in Greece, and by Mr. Thanasis Tsantilas, CEO of Iberdrola-Rokas, regarding the development of his company in Greece and the positive prospects of the Greek RES sector.
