Sommeliers of Michelin-Starred, European Restaurants Meet the Stars of the Greek Vineyards

Athens, September 7, 2022 | Enterprise Greece and the Greek Wine Federation co-organized a visit of thirty three distinguished sommeliers and wine tasters from across Europe to help promote Greek wines.
The trip, which took place from 22-29 August 2022, included specially invited guests working in Michelin-starred restaurants in nine countries of Europe including the 3-star Rutz in Berlin, Azurmendi in Barcelona and Geranium in Copenhagen, which has been declared the number one restaurant in the world for 2022. The majority of the sommeliers, with 38 Michelin stars in total, arrived from Germany, but the trip also welcomed visitors from Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Netherlands, Sweden and Latvia.
The tour of Greek wine districts included visits to the wine-producing regions of Amyntaio, Naoussa, Epanomi, Serres, Attica, Nemea and Santorini. In various thematic wine tastings, wines from regions of Central and Western Macedonia, Drama, Central Greece and Attica as well as Crete, Kefalonia, Samos, Paros and Lesvos were tasted. In total, the participating sommeliers tasted more than 500 labels from 90 wineries from all over Greece.
“We are excited by the warm response of our distinguished guests to Greek wines and their enjoyment on the trip. Greek wine, with its distinctive native varieties, unique Greek vineyards and excellent value for money, is brilliant and is proving to be a preferred choice for the wine cellars of the world’s top restaurants,” said Dr. Yannis Vogiatzis, President of the Hellenic Wine Federation (SEO).
Executive Director and Member of the Board of Enterprise Greece, Betty Alexandropoulou, said: “Greek wine is taking the place it rightfully deserves in high-level, European hospitality. Events such as this make the quality of the Greek vineyard more widely known and raises its profile in international markets.”
The Board of Directors of SEO thanked Enterprise Greece for its continuous support in promoting premium Greek wine internationally and gave special thanks go to Evangelos Pattas, owner of the one-star Michelin restaurant Delice in Stuttgart, for his assistance in securing the presence of top sommeliers:
“This trip was a milestone for Greek wine. We traveled for a week to several wine regions of the country and also tasted many wines from the regions we didn’t get to visit. We learned a lot about the indigenous varietals of Greece, the unique terroirs and the outstanding know-how of the wineries. During this incredible week we have come to fully appreciate the huge progress Greek wine has made, and the sommeliers have been deeply impressed. It is clear to us that a new star is born: the star of Greek wine. Greece has captured our hearts and we especially thank SEO for that,” said Mr. Pattas.
