Thematic Tourism in Greece and Audio-visual Productions

Athens, July 18, 2022 | Enterprise Greece, with the support of the National Centre for Audiovisual Media and Communication (EKOME), held an informative event on thematic tourism in Greece and the synergies with audiovisual productions, on July 13, 2022.

The event was organized within the framework of the European Project THEMATIC – “Thematic Tourism founded on Innovation Capacities” – of the INTERREG ADRION 2014-2020 Program, under the title “Thematic Tourism in Greece through audiovisual productions.”

During the event, Enterprise Greece and the Region of Epirus, Regional Unit of Thesprotia, presented its pilot program Lights-Camera-Action, which aims to attract audiovisual productions to Greece, promote Greece’s comparative advantages for film production and related investments, and leverage the synergies between tourism and audiovisual production to enhance sustainable tourism.

In the pilot phase, Lights-Camera-Action, will develop a communication and action plan, based on locations in Thesprotia. However, the aim is for the plan to be easily replicable across the ADRION region.

Greece has, since the dawn of film, attracted international, landmark film productions, due to its unique locations, incomparable natural beauty and cultural heritage sites. In the few years since the introduction of generous rebates for film production in Greece, the program has taken off in a big way, hosting around 20 foreign productions just last year in various parts of Greece.

Betty Alexandropoulou, Executive Director and Member of the Board of Enterprise Greece, stated: “The national strategy aims to promote Greece as a top destination for thematic tourism and, at the same time, as an incomparable destination for audio-visual productions, due to the many and varied locations it offers. Greece, apart from its natural and architectural beauty, provides a safe and welcoming environment for international productions, generous incentives, experienced professionals, modern facilities and production at competitive costs.”

About INTERREG ADRION 2014-2020 Program
The Program promotes the development of sustainable, thematic tourism, with a special emphasis on culture and the creative industries, and highlights the natural wealth of the countries of the Adriatic-Ionian region (ADRION). The ADRION region is home to numerous natural and cultural heritage sites, many of which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The growing demand for thematic tourism not only creates new development opportunities but also risks for the region. Rapid visitor growth creates the conditions for economic prosperity, but also risks over-exploitation of fragile resources and may harm social and cultural diversity. The THEMATIC Project offers a common framework for capacity building in the areas of sustainable, thematic tourism planning and management.
