Workshop before Summer Fancy Food 2018

Greece is the Partner Country this year at the 64th Summer Fancy Food Show, to be held in New York from 30 June to 2 July 2018.

The Greek Pavilion will dominate the entrance of the Javits Center in New York City, and many of the 50,000 trade visitors will sample Greek food products to be exhibited by 44 dynamic exporters, with the support of Enterprise Greece.

As part of its ongoing program to provide support and information to Greek exporters, Enterprise Greece organized in Athens, 7 June 2018, an informative workshop titled “Understanding the Business of Specialty Foods in the USA.”

One hundred exporters filled the room where the workshop was held. The main speaker at the event was Mr. Phil Kafarakis, President of the Specialty Foods Association in the US. With years of experience in the US food market, Mr. Kafarakis briefed participants on issues relating to the US retail and foodservice markets, and outlined several channels through which Greek exporters can reach US consumers.

Representatives from the Foreign Ministry and the Export Credit Insurance Corporation, both involved in promoting exports from Greece, also contributed to the workshop. Foreign Ministry staff gave an overview of Greek exports to the US, and officials from the Export Credit Insurance Corporation informed participants about the financing tools it offers exporters.

Other information sessions included remarks by representatives of the Hellenic-American Chamber highlighting their services to exporters, and a briefing by the chairman of the Hellenic-Canadian Chamber of Commerce outlining the opportunities offered by the Canada-European Union Trade Agreement (CETA). There was also a separate briefing on certification procedures for Kosher products, something that could help extend the reach of Greek products in the US market.

Ms. Diamantopoulou, Ambassador, Director of the Deputy Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece, welcomed the agri-food enterprises present and stressed the importance of Greek food exports and particularly to the American market.

Enterprise Greece’s CEO, Mr. Elias Athanassiou, said during his speech: “The national participation of Greece and as a Partner Country is part of a comprehensive program of activities being undertaken by Enterprise Greece aimed at enhancing the visibility of Greek businesses, promoting Greek exports, and attracting investment. Our goal is to support the presence of Greek businesses at major events so they can effectively expand in both existing and new exports markets. Greek food exports to America and the rest of the world are growing year by year thanks to the quality of our products and their high nutritional value.”
