Enterprise Greece – SEV – ACCI and SEVE organize event for business opportunities in Jordan

Enterprise Greece, the national investment and trade promotion agency, this month co-hosted in collaboration with Greece’s leading business associations an online event focusing on Jordan and the prospects for deepening bilateral economic relations.
The Discover Jordan webinar, held Wednesday, 27 April 2022, brought together experts and business leaders to explore commercial opportunities between Jordan and Greece, with particular emphasis on sectors such as food, medicine, construction materials, energy and environmental services.
The event was co-organized with the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) and the Greek Exporters Association (SEVE). Eurobank sponsored the event, which was also supported by the Greek Embassy in Jordan and the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Greece.
Discover Jordan is part of the ongoing Discover series of digital events, initially created by Enterprise Greece in response to COVID restrictions on live events. Based on the positive response and wide participation, the Discover events will continue as an effective means of expanding the market for Greek exports and highlighting investment opportunities.
Jordan’s open trade policy and numerous free trade agreements make the country an attractive destination for enterprises engaged in international trade and provide a springboard for Greek businesses to access the wider Middle East. The country has one of the region’s fastest growing economies, boasts low labor costs and tax rates, and has a business-friendly environment. The country is a significant producer of phosphates and potash, and has a well-developed tourism sector. Thanks to continuous investment in renewable energy, Jordan has also emerged as a regional leader in the development of solar energy.
The event featured speakers who provided up-to-date information on the business environment and commercial opportunities in Jordan, as well as representatives of Greek businesses already active in the Jordanian market. Currently, the main Greek exports to Jordan are fruits, nuts, pharmaceuticals, and electronic equipment, while Greece imports copper, salt, cement, aluminum, and machinery from Jordan.
Enterprise Greece CEO, Georgios Filiopoulos, said that: “Greece and Jordan have maintained, over time, very good bilateral relations and are considered pillars of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, defending peace, security and freedom in the region. In particular, in the post-Covid era, there is great room for strengthening trade ties between our two countries.”
Opening the event, George Xirogiannis, Deputy General Manager of SEV, said: “Bilateral trade with Jordan has not developed to the extent we wish. But the margins for improvement are significant since Greek products are popular for their quality as well as their good prices.”
In welcoming remarks, Dimitris Dimitriou, Member of the Board of Directors of ACCI & Head of Business Advisory Support, said: “It is important to emphasize the friendly relations between the two countries and the possibility of creating new investment opportunities and relations, focusing on the banking sector, services, IT and start-ups. At the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), we place special emphasis on startups, having a highly organized start-up support structure in the form of the Athens Startup Business Incubator (THEA).”
SEVE Executive Vice President Panagiotis Hasapis noted that the situation in the world economy and in world trade, particularly post-Covid and with the war in Ukraine, demonstrated the need for a wider portfolio of partnerships and strategic alliances, especially with friendly and promising countries such as Jordan.
The event was attended alphabetically by: Ms Eleni Albanti (Exportgate, i-Services, Global Transaction Banking, Eurobank), Ms Eleftheria Galathianaki (Ambassador of Greece to Jordan), Mr Vassilis Grapsas (Project Manager, Mytilineos S.A.), Mr Christos Demertzis (Commercial Director, HB Body Group), Mr Ashraf Khasawneh (Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Hashemite Kingedome of Jordan in Greece ), Ms Maria Paschalidou (Vice President, Grantex S.A.), Ms Vasiliki Simi (Secretary for Economic & Commercial Affairs, B5 Directorate of Bilateral Economic Relations with the Middle East, North Africa, Gulf, Asia, Oceania & Sub-Saharan Africa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and Mr Ahed Ali Sweidat (Ambassador of Jordan in Greece).
