Greece presents investments in research and development at Expo Dubai 2020 Event for the innovation ecosystem

Athens, 22 February 2022 | The technology and innovation sector is a strategic priority for Enterprise Greece and the centerpiece of the Greek presence in the Expo 2020 Dubai exhibition. Under the banner: “Greece Tomorrow, Today,” the Greek pavilion highlights the competitive advantages of Greece that make the country an attractive investment destination.

As part of a high-level Greek business mission, headed by Deputy Minister of Development and Investment, in charge of Research and Innovation, Christos Dimas, to the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Dimas hosted an event in the Greek pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, on: “Elevating Science, Technology & Innovation.”

The mission aims to promote cooperation and investment and present the potential of the Greek technology and innovation ecosystem. The visit is organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Enterprise Greece, the Embassy in Abu Dhabi, and the Dubai Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs.

“Elevating Science, Technology & Innovation” took place at the Terra Auditorium with the participation of 15 Greek startups, members of Elevate Greece, the official startup portal for in-depth information about the Greek startup ecosystem, 7 research centers and representatives of the technology park Thess INTEC.

Christos Dimas stated: “The Greek ecosystem of research and innovation is increasingly expanding its activities beyond Greece. This is the first visit of an official Greek business, research, and scientific mission to the United Arab Emirates. The purpose of our visit here is the extroversion of the Greek ecosystem, the deepening of our cooperation, in terms of investment, but also in terms of the exchange of ideas and the study of best practices on issues related to the development of innovation ecosystems and research activity.”

In his greeting, the Secretary General of International Economic Relations and Openness of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of Enterprise Greece, and Commissioner General of Greece at Expo 2020 Dubai, Ioannis Smyrlis, referred to the slogan of the Greek participation “Greece Tomorrow, Today,” emphasized that the country is entering a new era, after sweeping reforms, with confidence and optimism and is on a growth trajectory.

Mr. Smyrlis stated that the leading role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the promotion of economic diplomacy, as well as in the formulation of a clear and coherent strategy for trade, investment and economic extroversion, and the creation of the “Portal of Extroversion” of the General Secretariat for International Economic Relations are of great importance. The network of embassies, consulates and economic and commercial affairs offices, that also promote Greek innovative entrepreneurship, are now part of the General Secretariat for International Economic Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Secretary General also referred to Elevate Greece, the initiative of the Ministry of Development and Investment, which maps startups and support their development in order to foster a strong innovation ecosystem. Concluding, Mr. Smyrlis pointed out that Enterprise Greece, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, supports innovative business ideas with strong potential for extroversion, emphasizing that the National Strategy for Extroversion 2022 is moving in the same direction and incorporates numerous actions supporting Greek innovative entrepreneurship around the world.

Expo 2020 Dubai will last until 31 March 2022 and Enterprise Greece is responsible for the Greek participation.
