Athens, 27 July 2022 | Greece welcomed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and a delegation of senior Saudi officials and executives on an official visit to Athens, during which leading Greek and Saudi businesses signed a series of bilateral agreements in areas relating to telecommunications, energy, and other sectors.
The two-day visit by the Crown Prince underscores the ever-closer strategic relationship between the two countries, which includes joint initiatives in the areas of investment, defense, and culture. It follows an official visit by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia last year, and a meeting of the 5th Joint Ministerial Committee of Greece and Saudi Arabia in Athens in late May.
Among the agreements is a landmark €1 billion (3.75 billion SAR) joint venture to develop a high-speed submarine data cable that will link Europe with Asia known as the East to Med Data Corridor. The project will help Greece cement its position as a telecommunications gateway to Europe, while also advancing Saudi Arabia’s efforts to build its digital economy.
Another key agreement is a €2.6 billion (10 billion SAR) investment deal in energy covering both conventional and renewable energy sources. The agreement will marry Saudi Arabia’s expertise in the energy sector with Greece’s growing role as an energy hub for the wider region.
Other agreements, signed on the 27th of July 2022, during the Greece – Saudi Business Meeting, co-organized by the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Enterprise Greece, include memoranda of understanding in the fields of maritime transport, aquaculture, waste management, culture, food & agricultural products, building & construction services, and defense technology.
The agreements follow a high-level Greek-Saudi Business Forum held from 29 to 31 May in Athens. The Saudi business delegation to the Forum included senior executives from fifty-nine companies active in key sectors of the economy including energy, construction, tourism, and logistics. Participating Greek and Saudi businesses held 234 business-to-business (B2B) meetings in connection with the Forum.
