Greek participation at world’s leading food fair Anuga 2017 jumps 30%

The number of Greek companies participating in this year’s biennial Anuga exhibition, the world’s largest food trade fair, has increased by 30%, reflecting the growing strength of Greek food and beverage exporters.

Enterprise Greece, the state trade and promotion agency, is organizing the national participation at Anuga 2017, which was inaugurated in Cologne, Germany on October 7th and will run until October 11. Organizing the Greek national delegation is part of the agency’s action plan to enhance the visibility of Greek enterprises, thereby promoting both Greek exports and attracting potential investment to the sector.

At this year’s Anuga fair, 107 countries and more than 7,400 exhibitors will take part. The Greek delegation ranks sixth in terms of participation. The roughly 2,800 square meter Greek national pavilion is hosting 160 export oriented companies who are showcasing a wide range of Greek food products. Also present are exhibitors from the regional districts of Attica, Thessaly and Central Greece, as well as the Chambers of Commerce of Achaia, Kozani, Larissa and Trikala.

The increased Greek participation can be explained, in part, by the growing strength of Greek exports. According to the latest data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (Elstat), for the first eight months of 2017 the value of Greek exports (including petroleum products) totaled €18.66 billion. That represents a 15.1% increase from €16.21 billion worth of products exported in the same period a year ago.

Increased Greek participation at this year’s Anuga show, also reflects the intensified efforts of Greek exporters over the past few years to penetrate major and growing international markets as part of their growing export orientation.

Enterprise Greece Chairman Christos Staikos said:  “In organizing this year’s national participation at Anuga 2017, we are supporting the export efforts of Greek enterprises. This year’s participation is 30% higher than the previous show and we are here to promote the export orientation of these companies, as well as showcase the dynamism of the Greek food industry through strong national branding. The response is positive, something which is evident in the increase in Greek exports.”

Enterprise Greece CEO Elias Athanasiou added: “The slogan of this year’s national participation in Anuga 2017 is ‘Invest in Taste’, a message that declares that someone choosing Greek products is investing in taste, quality and well-being. At the same time, it is an open invitation to foreign investors to invest in the promising and dynamic agro-food sector of the country. As such, we are appealing to the especially important German market, as well as other countries participating, with a dual message. We are promoting Greek exports, and seeking to attract investment, which together comprise the two basic pillars of Greek economic growth.”

On the first day of the Anuga 2017 fair, the Greek pavilion was honored with the presence of the Greek Consul General in Dusseldorf, Mrs. Maria Papakonstantinou, the Head of the Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs in Dusseldorf, Mr. Paris Nikolis, as well as the First Secretary for Economic and Commercial Affairs, Mrs. Maria Vasilaki, in Dusseldorf. Accompanied by the leadership of Enterprise Greece, Chairman Mr. Christos Staikos and CEO, Mr. Elias Athanasiou, the dignitaries had the opportunity to meet and speak with the Greek company representatives present.

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, the pavilion will also host a GREECE GOURMET salon, a designated space for tasting Greek foods, as well as for corporate presentations and for holding business meetings. The salon will serve to showcase the Greek agro-food sector, one of the most dynamic and high growth sectors of Greek industry.

Large numbers of visitors have already had the opportunity to savor Greek dishes, while on Saturday, October 7th, a special exhibition was held at the national pavilion with the participation of the Greek exhibitors. Likewise on Sunday, October 8th, Enterprise Greece hosted German importers and distributors at the GREECE GOURMET salon, allowing them to sample the exceptional quality of Greek food products, thereby promoting Greek businesses and Greek food products with leading representatives of the German market.
